Ahh, how the long weeks of summer stretch so long but fly by so quickly. Sam and I seem to be making hurried lists of things we plan on doing this summer with only a few weekends left. I find this time of year it’s easy to have inspiration fatigue. A long summer is lovely but weeks on end of stifling heat can leave even the most creative designer less than energetic. Here’s a little list of things we do at MM HQ to stay inspired and motivated. Maybe a few of you are in need of a rev up like I am.
Go on a walk, even if it’s hot. I sort of bemoan our daily morning walks when it’s over ninety degrees but always trudge through. Getting outside and seeing the sunlight early in the morning is the best source of energy for the day. If LSD says so, it must be true.
Take an afternoon or a few hours to do something that has nothing to do with your job. When Sam and I are on a design deadline, sometimes the last thing I want to do is look at clothes. A very, very long obsession of mine is this youtube show. I know, very not MM. But sometimes a thirty-minute laugh is all you need to reset your brain. Yes, we did go down to Chelsea Market this week to buy sauces from the show. And yes, one of the things on our end of summer to do list is throw a Hot Ones Party. I came back to the office ready to knock out finalizing Daphne colors for fall. By the way, they’re all new and so good.
Buy yourself a little tiny treat. Ladies, my love language is gifts what can I say. Some of my favorite pre-owned tabletop books are very reasonably priced. There’s nothing that will take up space in your brain where work should be happening like waiting for a new book to come in the mail. And if UPS loses it, well, there’s your next project….
Our MM movie lists are almost as reliable as exercise for inspiration. Always a good idea. I need to add this movie to our next list. While it’s hokey and a little cheesy, I think it’s often overlooked. Who wouldn’t want to stare at Rock Hudson for 90 minutes?
Happy Saturday.
Xx, MM
